Silent boom
Irresponsible entertainment criticism
2023
This critical design project revolves around the creation of a fictional brand, referring to a hypothetical product in a thought-provoking narrative. The project addresses the social and environmental consequences of mindless, often irresponsible entertainment trends. Product concept is accompanied by a narrative, describing the future reality.
Concept
Since 2030, people have embraced the use of drones and sky screens to celebrate events, replacing traditional fireworks with advanced technology. However, this radical shift was not without its consequences, as it altered the way society perceived and engaged in celebrations.
Background
The advent of advanced technology rendered traditional fireworks obsolete, as people began to rely on drones and sky screens for celebrations. The older generation celebrated the end of traditional fireworks, recalling the dangers and damage they had caused during their youth. The booming sounds of fireworks were reminiscent of wartime memories, causing great distress among the elderly. The younger generation, however, revived the popularity of fireworks in 2050, much to the chagrin of their elders.
The Challenge
In response to complaints from the older generation and concerns from climate scientists about the use of harmful substances in fireworks, numerous companies attempted to replicate the old fireworks experience. Only one company succeeded in refining the old designs to create quieter fireworks, while minimizing environmental impact. To replicate the nostalgic experience of lighting a fuse, this company used harmful substances, including heavy metals, carcinogens, and pollutants. This practice met resistance not only from Millennials but also from environmental advocates.
Innovative Solution
In response to the challenges, the company established special, sealed-off areas for fireworks displays, equipped with ventilation systems to mitigate the release of harmful substances. These areas also aimed to protect the night sky from light pollution. This innovation was met with enthusiasm from both the younger and older generations, although the cost of participation limited accessibility.
Government Regulations
Due to concerns about safety and environmental impact, the government mandated that these designated spaces should be situated outside urban areas to mitigate risks to the city and its residents.
Future Expansion: The company is now poised for growth and intends to establish its buildings in the most luxurious areas of city centers. This marks a significant evolution from their initial, critical design approach to fireworks and reflects their ambition to provide exclusive entertainment experiences to a wider audience.
Rebranding and photography development
In further work on the project, I decided to refresh the look of the product and create new visuals. The photographs are the result of a combination of AI-generated images and digital photography.
